While the year may have kicked off with its share of alarming news as far as climate change, including NASA's confirmation that 2014 was hottest year in recorded history, there was also some positive news in terms of green technology and renewable energy. I

n 2014 green tech and renewables achieved record growth and further technological development and implementation.

Lets hope that in 2015 we continue to build on these accomplishments.

Here are 5 examples of recent gains and innovations across green technology and renewable energy.

NISSAN LEAF GRABS A QUARTER OF THE EUROPEAN ELECTRIC CAR MARKET

The Nissan Leaf had a major sales boost in Europe in 2014 - seeing a massive 33% rise.

The company was able to secure a 26% share of the European market, beating out rival manufacturers of new electric cars. Nissan sold 56,000 of these electric vehicles last year.

The Renault Zoe was in second place with with 11,227 models sold in Europe, followed by the Telsa Model S.

WORLD'S FIRST SOLAR PLANE READY FOR RECORD ROUND THE WORLD FLIGHT

The world's first solar plane, Solar Impulse 2, has been cleared for a 35,000 km circumnavigation flight.

This flight will take the plane around the world, via Oman, India, China and the US over a period of 25 days, flying day and night. The plane will fly at speeds of 50 to 100 kilometers per hour.

Bertrand Piccard, founder and chairman of Solar Impulse, hopes the flight will demonstrate the future capacity of clean and renewable energy.

The record attempt flight is the culmination of 12 years of studies, designs and construction from Solar Impulse.

ROOFTOP SOLAR SHOWN TO BOOST HOME VALUES ACCORDING TO LARGEST EVER STUDY

A study led by the US Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory found that home-buyers are willing to pay a premium on homes if they come with a solar PV system.

The study is largest of its kind and analyzed almost 22, 000 house sales across eight states in the United States from 1999 to 2013.

According to the study, home-buyers were willing to pay more for homes with solar PV systems to the tune of about 15,000.

SOLAR POWER MOVES FORWARD IN MOROCCO


The Moroccan Solar Energy Agency is moving forward on the second and third phases of a huge concentrated solar power plant.

Once complete the project will produce 500 megawatts of power, 18 % of Morroco's annual electricity generation.

This project is the latest in the series of solar projects which aims to provide Morocco with 2000 megawatts of solar power by 2020.

GERMANY MORE THEN DOUBLES ITS OFFSHORE WIND CAPACITY

In 2014 Germany installed 543 offshore wind turbines, reaching 2.35 gigawatts, more then doubling its offshore wind capacity.

This moves Germany closer to country's goal of reaching 6.5 W of wind energy infrastructure by 2020.

Germany has been called "the world's first major renewable energy economy". The countries renewable energy sector has grown from 6.4% in 2000 to over 30% in 2014.
